Frequently Asked Questions

PETFIX's spay and neuter clinics offer essential services to help control the population and enhance the health and overall well-being of dogs and cats on the Big Island. Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters, reduces the risk of certain cancers, and improves animal behavior.

We hope the information on this page will answer your question about process, surgery and more.

If you still have questions, please send us an email.

What will it cost to spay/neuter my animal?

Nothing! Our services are always free, however donations are ALWAYS appreciated!

How do I make an appointment?

The first step is to get on our waitlist; our automated system will contact you (text/email) when an upcoming clinic opens up and will direct you to the next steps to register. Appointments fill up FAST---when you receive the message that a new clinic is available, go online to register ASAP!

3

Where is my appointment?

You will receive a confirmation message once you have successfully registered for a specific clinic date/location, with your appointment time, the clinic's address, and additional information.  You will also receive a QR code to assist you with checking in on the day of the clinic. Keep that code handy on your phone when you come to the clinic!

4

What prep do I need to do before and after surgery?

Please do not feed your cat/dog after midnight the day prior to surgery. Water is fine.

Remember to bring a kennel/carrier or trap (community cat), if you have one.  We have a limited supply and all animals must be secured before and after surgery.

We will offer you details on after-care when you collect your cat/dog.

5

Do I have to have my cat's ear tipped?

As part of our standard procedure, all cats will have their ear tipped (left for males, right for females): this is non-negotiable. This simple, painless procedure safeguards your cat from ever undergoing a second, unnecessary, surgery -- surgical scars and tattoos disappear.  Even indoor cats will have their ear tipped.

We respect that this may not be something you want, and if so, we encourage you to consider taking your cat to a full-service veterinary clinic for their spay/neuter procedure.

Here's some good information on the importance of ear tipping.

6

Can a pregnant animal be spayed?

Yes, we take in pregnant cats/dogs. If you think or know that your animal is pregnant, please inform the registration staff when you drop off your pet.

7

Are microchips and vaccines mandatory?

Starting in 2022, the State of Hawaii made it mandatory for all cats/dogs to be microchipped. Even if your pet is 'indoors always,' there is still a chance it could escape. Microchipping make a huge difference in reconnecting a lost pet to their owner.

Vaccines are not mandatory, but we do offer a small variety depending on whether you have a cat or a dog.  If you animal has been vaccinated recently (within the last year), you'll be asked some questions during the online registration process and when you drop off your pet on the clinic day.
